VAARHAFT @ Better Online 2023

“Man & Machine - What intelligence journalism needs”.
This was the motto that we attended the “Besser Online” journalism congress in Wuppertal with VAARHAFT last Saturday. Media professionals from all over Germany met there to discuss the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence for journalism.
A highlight was undoubtedly our panel talk on the topic of “Technology against deepfakes”, where we discussed the current state of tool development for deepfake detection and prevention together with Prof. Dr. Philipp Slusallek, the director of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) , and Kilian Haller as moderator. An exciting and valuable exchange!
We would like to thank the DJV - German Journalists Association for the invitation and organization of the entire event. Special thanks go to Frank Sonnenberg and Luciana Aguileira.
Our findings of this day:
-
Artificial intelligence, especially deepfakes, have long since begun to change journalism
-
In times of deepfakes and disinformation, a trustworthy source for images or information is essential.
-
The unwitting use of undetected deepfakes in reporting can lead to a significant loss of trust in media and news.
-
Transparency in reporting is more important than ever. Journalists should use AI tools responsibly and transparently label their use in their work, e.g. when using language models to create text such as #chatGPT.
-
In addition to exposing disinformation (debunking), preventive awareness-raising on the topic (prebunking) is a very important addition to prevent misinformation and manipulation, including through deepfakes, and to create more transparency in society.
-
AI should not only be seen as a threat, but can also offer opportunities. If used sensibly in journalistic work, this technology can certainly bring advantages, for example for faster and easier research.
